Voluntary Separations

IRs requesting to separate from the Air Force Reserve may do so for a number of reasons, the most common are listed below. For any other separations inquiries, please contact your servicing RIO Detachment.
 
Common Types of AFR Separations

  • Enlisted only: Expired Term of Service (ETS) Separation
    - Members who elect to not reenlist will be discharged upon their ETS date.
    - Please contact the HQ RIO TMC office for more information.
  • Officer only: Voluntary Separation
    - Refer to AFI 36-3211, chapter 15 for voluntary separation reasons, if a service obligation exists, the member may elect to transfer to the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR) for the remainder of the obligation vs. separation.
    - Please contact your servicing RIO Detachment for more information and required coordination.
  • Officer only: Tender of Resignation
    - Members may elect to resign, per AFI 36-3211, Chpt 15.13.
    - Please contact your servicing RIO Detachment for more information and required coordination.

Note: IRs are not authorized to submit a separation action without consulting with the servicing RIO Detachment.
