Types of Retirements 

Reserve Retirement – Airmen must complete at least 20 years of Satisfactory Service to be eligible to apply for a Reserve Retirement.  

  • Airmen medically disqualified for worldwide duty (AAC 37), who have completed at least 15 years of satisfactory service, are eligible to apply for the Retired Reserve. 

Regular (Active Duty) Retirement – Airmen must complete at least 20 years of Total Active Federal Military Service to be eligible to apply for a Regular Retirement. 

  • Officer must have at least 10 years of Total Active Commissioned Service (TAFCS) 

  • Requested Retirement dates must be the 1st of the month. 

Requesting Retirement 

  • Retirement requests are submitted via myFSS in the “myRetirements” tile. Retirements 

  • Retirement effective date cannot be after Mandatory Separation Date (MSD), High Year of Tenure Date (HYT) or Expiration Term of Service (ETS).  

  • Transfer to the Retired Reserve is not automatic 

  • Participation is not authorized on or after their retirement effective, for pay or points.

Retirement Process 

  • Apply no earlier than 1 year and no later than 180 prior to requested to retirement date. 

  • HQ RIO Talent Management Consultant office will review eligibility within 10 duty days  

  • Routes to Det/CC for approval  

  • Routes to ARPC Retirements for action  

ARPC Reserve Retirement Consultation Cell – The RRCC team can help answer Reserve Airmen’s questions about military retirement, such as estimated retirement pay, reduced retirement pay age, the reserve component survivor benefit plan, and many other retirement-related inquiries. Their mission is to educate Reserve Airmen by providing up-to-date and timely information necessary to assist themselves and their families in making life-changing decisions regarding military retirement.

The opt-in/election period for the Blended Retirement System concluded on December 31, 2018. All Service members who entered the military on or after January 1, 2018, are automatically be enrolled in BRS.
